How relevant are passive antennas in the age of massive MIMO?

Massive MIMO has transformed mobile networks, but advanced passive antennas remain essential for improving performance cost-effectively. PerforMax antennasOver the three decades I have been involved in the base station antenna industry, I have seen many trends emerge and, in some cases, fade away. Some readers may remember log-periodic antennas, circularly polarized antennas, or even antennas with adjustable azimuth beamwidths.

Few innovations, however, have had as much impact on network design as massive MIMO (mMIMO). With its ability to create focused beams and dynamically allocate resources across the served sector, mMIMO has fundamentally changed how operators think about network performance.

It also raises an important question:

Is there still a place for passive antennas in today's mobile networks?

But just as mMIMO technology has evolved to improve network performance, passive antennas have evolved as well.
